Onepunch Man is, Like, Weirdly Gorgeous

Did you guys see the premiere of Onepunch Man? Hooooly crap.

So this is a series that I’ve been reading since early this year or so, and luckily for me the fine people at Madhouse were kind enough to announce an anime back in March. I’ve been slowly salivating over previews since the summer and it’s finally here.

And it’s, well it’s pretty. Like, probably prettier than it has any right to be.

It’s no Attack on Titan – you’re not going to see our hero Saitama staring off into any meticulously drawn sunsets any time soon. And yes, there’s a kid who has balls for a chin. I mean, I wish there was a way to soften the testicular blow there, but the kid has testicles where his chin should be. One only wonders if he’s hiding a tiny goatee in his boxers.

But given that the manga alternates between something you’d see in a triple-A title and something you’d see in a fourth grader’s sketchbook, it’ clear that Madhouse is leaning heavily on the “goddamn sometimes Onepunch Man is pretty” side of things. And you know what? I’m okay with that. I’ll be okay if they sacrifice some of the visual humor to maintain this aesthetic. Mind you, I’ll be okay if they don’t sacrifice the visual humor as well, but only time will tell I suppose. We’re one episode in here, people.
Suffice it to say that the first episode has me stoked for the even more visually stunning parts of the manga that they’re bound to cover in the near future.
